It would be great if there was a maintenance schedule for a sump pump

Hi Paula,
Annual maintenance is extremely important. Sump pumps will sit for months (or years) without use, but when they are needed they are really needed!
Maintenance is pretty simple but safety first, turn off your breaker and unplug your pump. Then disconnect your pump from the discharge line and remove it from the pit.
Place your pump on a work bench and remove the check valve. You're going to want to clean/clear any debris from the exterior, so it may be best do this outside and spray it down with a garden hose.
Use a wire brush to clean the inlet screen. If your pump has been doing some serious duty this year, I'd suggest bumping up the frequency of this to every couple of months.
Once that's all cleaned up, check your check valve and make sure it's in working order and not obstructed. Your bearings could potentially need grease, but this is rare.
Put it back together and reinstall it. Dump a bucket of water into your pit and if your pump turns on, you're good to go!
