Clean Shower Curtain / Glass

Bathroom shower doors are notorious for accumulating soap scum and grime. However, with the proper cleaning methods, shower doors can remain clean longer and even repel soap scum. Both glass and plastic shower doors can be cleaned using the same process using either commercial or natural materials.

Tips For Cleaning Plastic Curtains

  1. Never use cold water to wash your plastic shower curtain. Many plastic shower curtains can become brittle in cold water, making it more likely to shred. Always use warm water for the best clean. Even if you are just washing a fabric liner, still opt for warm.
  2. Do use your regular detergent. Use enough for a medium-sized load.
  3. Don't use fabric softener. Fabric softener can add a layer of film to your shower curtain that can attract grime.
  4. Set your washer to Normal cycle. It won't take much to get the grime off of your shower curtain, so no need for heavier cycles.
  5. Don't put it in the dryer. As soon as your shower curtain is finished washing, hang it back on the rod and let it air dry. Your dryer can melt or distort certain fabrics.

Tips For Glass Shower Doors

Clean them with vinegar, baking soda, and salt.Stubborn mineral buildup on glass shower doors is no competition for a few common household ingredients—white vinegar, baking soda, and salt. Spray vinegar on the door and let it sit for a few minutes. Next, create a paste with equal amounts of baking soda and salt. Use a damp sponge to rub this paste over the door; then rinse well.

Use furniture oil to prevent buildup. Cleaning soap scum off a shower door is a tough, time-consuming job. Try using lemon oil furniture polish as a barrier against the scummy buildup. The next time you clean the door, follow up by wiping it with furniture oil on a soft rag. Let the oil sit for two minutes and then polish off the excess with a dry cloth. The furniture polish will leave a slight film of oil that will act as a buffer against future soap scum. Using a shower squeegee (available at discount stores and supermarkets) after every shower will also discourage the buildup.
